Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - Address Symptoms and Issues With Effective Strategies

autismAnyone who has been touched by autism knows how difficult life can be for the individual and their family.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger’s syndrome.

ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.

The struggle to understand a child or adult with ASD and develop a relationship that is meaningful is difficult but very achievable with the right guidance and awareness.  There is no clear cause and no clear answer for autism but there are clear strategies that have worked for many years and may be helpful to you.
